Washington Car Sales Tax in 2026: What Tri-Cities Buyers Actually Pay

Last updated Oct 28, 2026

Most people think car tax depends on where they live. At a dealer, it depends on where you buy. Here’s what that means, with the state’s own numbers.

Tax note: Every rate and rule below comes from the Washington Department of Revenue (DOR), Q4 2026, checked Oct 13, 2026 (links at the bottom). This guide is general information, not tax advice. Confirm your exact numbers with the desk.

Quick answer: In 2026, buying a car at a Washington dealer means state sales tax (6.5%), the local rate where the dealer is, plus an extra 0.5% motor vehicle tax. In Pasco that totals 9.1%. A trade-in lowers the taxable price. Confirm your exact rate with the desk or the DOR rate lookup.

You found the car. Then someone says “plus tax,” and nobody can tell you how much. Is it your home rate? The dealer’s? Does your trade help?

Hey, I’m Rick G. at Overturf KIA in Pasco. I get these questions a lot, so here are the plain rules from the Washington Department of Revenue (DOR). I’m not a tax pro, and I won’t guess. I’ll show you what the state says and the simple math.

How car sales tax is different from regular sales tax

A car has two pieces of tax at a Washington dealer:

  1. Regular sales tax: the 6.5% state rate plus the local rate where the dealer is.
  2. An extra 0.5% motor vehicle tax. DOR says it went from 0.3% to 0.5% on Jan. 1, 2026. The seller collects it. It also covers dealer-installed extras added before delivery, like a tow hitch. It does not cover warranties, maintenance plans, or repairs.

One more thing: some cities have a lower rate on cars than on everyday purchases. DOR says a local “public safety” tax does not apply to car sales. That’s why Pasco is 8.6% plus 0.5% on a car, not the 8.9% you pay at the store.

Where you buy sets the rate, not where you live

DOR says sales tax on motor vehicles “is based on the seller’s location even if the seller delivers the items to the customer.”

So if you live in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Everett or Vancouver and buy at Overturf Kia in Pasco, you pay Pasco’s rate. Leases work differently (see below).

2026 rates: Pasco vs Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Everett and Vancouver

City (County) Local + state rate on a vehicle Extra MV tax Total on a vehicle
Pasco (Franklin) 8.6% 0.5% 9.1%
Seattle (King) 10.55% 0.5% 11.05%
Tacoma (Pierce) 10.5% 0.5% 11.0%
Olympia (Thurston) 9.7% 0.5% 10.2%
Everett (Snohomish) 9.9% 0.5% 10.4%
Vancouver (Clark) 8.8% 0.5% 9.3%

Rates as of Q4 2026 (Oct 1 to Dec 31, 2026) per the WA Department of Revenue motor vehicle rate flyer, checked Oct 13, 2026. The total adds DOR’s 0.5% to the flyer’s combined rate. Rates can differ inside a county. Confirm the exact rate with the desk or the DOR tax rate lookup.

Worked examples (Example only)

Example: a $30,000 taxable price. This is a made-up round number, not a Kia price or a quote. Math uses only the rates above.

Example only Total rate Tax on $30,000 Difference vs Pasco
Pasco 9.1% $30,000 × 0.091 = $2,730 n/a
Seattle 11.05% $30,000 × 0.1105 = $3,315 $585
Tacoma 11.0% $30,000 × 0.110 = $3,300 $570
Olympia 10.2% $30,000 × 0.102 = $3,060 $330
Everett 10.4% $30,000 × 0.104 = $3,120 $390
Vancouver 9.3% $30,000 × 0.093 = $2,790 $60

The difference column is only rate math on the same made-up price. It is not a promise of savings on any deal.

Example: the same $30,000 with a $10,000 trade-in. Regular sales tax is figured on the price after the trade, so in Pasco the 8.6% sales tax part is figured on $20,000: $20,000 × 0.086 = $1,720 instead of $30,000 × 0.086 = $2,580. That’s $860 less sales tax in this example. The desk confirms the full tax at write-up.

Example only. Not a quote. Your selling price, trade value, and exact location code decide the real number. Confirm with the desk or the DOR tax rate lookup. License, title, and registration fees are separate and not covered here.

How a trade-in lowers your sales tax

DOR’s trade-in rules:

  • Sales tax is figured on the price after the trade-in value is taken off (vehicle for vehicle).
  • The trade value and type must be on the purchase agreement.
  • Still owe on it? The loan does not shrink the credit. DOR’s example: a $4,000 trade with $1,500 owed still gets a $4,000 credit.
  • Cash back from your trade is not trade-in credit.
  • You don’t need proof you paid tax on the trade.

Want to bring it by? Here’s what to bring for your trade.

Factory rebates vs dealer discounts

DOR says rebates from the manufacturer are part of the selling price, so they are taxed. A rebate from the dealer counts as a discount and is not taxed. That’s just the rule. At Overturf: Fresh write-up on the lot. MSRP plus today’s published incentives. No couch quotes.

Is the doc fee taxed?

No. DOR says document service fees are not subject to sales tax.

Buying from Oregon (Pendleton, Hermiston)

DOR says nonresidents pay no Washington sales tax on a car used outside Washington if it leaves on a trip permit, or is registered right away in your home state and not used in Washington more than 3 months. Qualifying sales also skip the 0.5%.

You won’t qualify if you have a home in Washington, or if you live here for a while and use the car here more than 3 months. Bring your Oregon driver’s license and a recent bill or document with your Oregon street address. The dealer also keeps signed state forms. Oregon’s own taxes and fees aren’t covered here.

Leasing and sales tax

A lease is taxed on each payment. DOR says the rate on your payments is where the car is usually kept, not where you lease it. The down payment and buyout use the dealer’s location. The 0.5% applies to leases too. A trade put toward the lease generally isn’t taxed, but cash down generally is. The desk walks you through it at write-up.

Is there still an EV or plug-in hybrid sales tax break?

No. DOR says the exemption ended for sales delivered after July 31, 2025. EVs and plug-in hybrids now pay regular sales tax. Leases signed by July 31, 2025 keep it on payments through July 31, 2028. Plain hybrids never qualified. DOR shows no replacement break that I found.

The new luxury vehicle tax (over $102,000)

Since Jan. 1, 2026, DOR lists an 8% tax on the part of a car’s price over a set amount. That amount is $102,000 from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. It’s on top of sales tax, and a trade does not lower it.

FAQs

How much is sales tax on a car in Washington?
It depends on where the dealer is, not where you live. At a Washington dealer you pay the 6.5% state rate, plus the local rate where the dealer sits, plus an extra 0.5% motor vehicle tax that started Jan. 1, 2026. For Q4 2026, that adds up to 9.1% in Pasco, 11.05% in Seattle, 11.0% in Tacoma, 10.2% in Olympia, 10.4% in Everett, and 9.3% in Vancouver. A trade-in lowers the taxable price. Rates change every quarter, so check the DOR tax rate lookup or ask the desk for your exact number.

What is the sales tax on a car in Pasco, WA?
For Q4 2026, the WA Department of Revenue lists an 8.6% combined rate for motor vehicle sales in Pasco, plus the extra 0.5% motor vehicle sales tax, for 9.1% total. Confirm with the desk or the DOR tax rate lookup.

Is Washington car sales tax based on where I live or where I buy?
For a dealer sale, the WA Department of Revenue says sales tax on motor vehicles is based on the seller’s location. Leases are different: monthly payments are taxed where the vehicle is usually kept. Confirm with the desk.

Does a trade-in lower sales tax in Washington?
Yes. Sales tax is figured on the price after the trade-in value is subtracted, and money still owed on the trade does not reduce that credit. Cash back from the trade does not count. The value must be on the purchase agreement.

Are factory rebates taxed in Washington?
Yes. The Department of Revenue treats manufacturer rebates as part of the selling price, so tax is charged before the rebate. A discount from the dealer is not part of the selling price and is not taxed.

Do Oregon residents pay Washington sales tax on a car?
Not if they qualify as nonresidents. The car must leave on a trip permit or be registered in Oregon right away and not used in Washington more than three months. Bring your Oregon license and a document showing your Oregon street address.

Is there still a Washington sales tax exemption for EVs or plug-in hybrids?
No. The exemption covered sales through July 31, 2025. Vehicles delivered after that pay regular sales tax. Leases signed by July 31, 2025 keep it on payments through July 31, 2028.
