Kia Sportage vs Toyota RAV4 in the Tri-Cities: warranty, Hybrid, and what to drive first

Last updated Oct 19, 2026

Specs note: Figures vary by year, trim, and options. Confirm the window sticker, kia.com / Toyota.com, and the year on the lot. Limited warranties; see dealer and kia.com/us/en/warranty for current terms.

Hey, I’m Rick G. at Overturf KIA in Pasco. If you’re shopping for a compact SUV for school runs, I-182 and US-395 miles, Hanford days on Hwy 240, and our Basin winters, you’re probably already deep in the RAV4 habit, whether you’re local or coming from Yakima, Spokane, or Pendleton. That’s fair. Toyota’s got the name. Kia’s got 10 yr / 100k on the powertrain. I’m not here to knock Toyota. I just want to put a Sportage next to the reputation you’ve been shopping, then do a fresh write-up on the lot: MSRP plus today’s published incentives.

Quick answer: who should lean Sportage?

Lean Sportage if you want to drive one in Pasco, get Kia’s long powertrain warranty for original owners, and have a clear Hybrid or PHEV choice you can check on the sticker instead of a national spreadsheet.

Lean RAV4 (hybrid-only for 2026) if you’re already sold on Toyota’s reliability and top hybrid mpg is your only filter. Even then, stop by so you know what you’d give up on warranty length and cabin feel.

My take: Most people cross-shopping these two need to feel the seats, the cargo space with the weekly Costco run, and whether AWD and the tires match January mornings. You get that on a drive. Book a drive · Bring your trade.

Warranty: Kia 10/100 vs Toyota 5/60 (limited, confirm on lot)

This is about warranty coverage. It’s not a payment promise or a scare tactic:

Coverage (typical U.S. new-vehicle framing) Kia Toyota
Bumper-to-bumper / basic 5 years / 60,000 miles 3 years / 36,000 miles
Powertrain 10 years / 100,000 miles (original purchaser / Kia CPO terms apply) 5 years / 60,000 miles

A few things I’ll always be straight about:

These are limited warranties. Check the booklet for the model year, the hybrid parts, and any CPO coverage on the car you buy, on the lot and at kia.com/us/en/warranty.

Kia’s long powertrain coverage is for the original owner (and applicable Kia CPO programs). Don’t assume a used Sportage bought from a private seller still has the 10/100.

Longer coverage doesn’t mean a Toyota will break. It’s just a real difference if you keep your cars a long time.

Toyota’s got the name. Kia’s got 10 yr / 100k on the powertrain. Compare the RAV4 on paper, then drive the Sportage here and decide with the booklet open.

Hybrid notes: Sportage Hybrid / PHEV vs RAV4 Hybrid

A lot of local shoppers start with the RAV4 Hybrid because it’s the mileage headline. The 2026 RAV4 is hybrid-only. Toyota rates it at 226 hp FWD / 236 hp AWD, and the EPA rates it at 43 mpg combined FWD and 41 to 42 combined AWD (Woodland 38). Check the sticker for the year you’re shopping.

For most drivers around here, including Hanford weeks on Hwy 240 with no plug, the Sportage Hybrid is the sweet spot. You get better mileage than gas without changing how you fuel up. Public Kia and EPA examples for 2026 put the Hybrid in a strong combined-mpg class, and FWD and AWD differ. Check every number on the window sticker.

The Sportage PHEV only pays off if you can plug in most days and a lot of your weekday miles fit the EV range, even with a Hanford day on Hwy 240. If you won’t plug in regularly, you’re usually better off with the Hybrid or gas. PHEV packaging and cargo can be different from gas and Hybrid too, so check the sticker first.

How I’d go about it: first, decide whether you want hybrid mpg with no plug, electric miles from a plug-in, or simple gas. Then browse overturfkia.com for a Sportage, Sportage Hybrid, or PHEV as equipped. Then drive what’s here. I won’t make up a Hybrid or PHEV VIN that isn’t on the lot.

A quick word for CX-5 shoppers

Some folks also look at a Mazda CX-5. It’s a fair compact SUV, but it’s not the main matchup on this page. Mazda publishes the same coverage as Toyota (3/36 basic + 5/60 powertrain), compared to Kia’s 10/100 powertrain coverage for original owners. If a CX-5 is on your list, start with a Sportage drive so you know the warranty and cabin trade before you finish shopping.

Space: real compact SUV life

The Sportage and RAV4 are both compact crossovers: two rows, room for groceries, Costco, and weekend bags, and car seats when you need them. Published cargo numbers vary by year, floor position, and Hybrid or PHEV packaging. Always check the SAE numbers on the sticker for the VIN you drive.

Here’s what matters around here. Check the space behind the second row for your weekly packing, and load your real bags into a Sportage on the Pasco lot when one is here. Check the back seat for car seats and for adults on a Yakima or Spokane day trip. And think about how it’ll fit downtown Kennewick and Richland parking spots and your garage.

Paper charts don’t replace sitting in the Sportage. Bring the car seat base or your weekend bag pile.

Winter and AWD (Eastern WA)

Basin frost, fog, and ice show up no matter what the badge says. AWD helps, but tires decide. I won’t pretend AWD alone makes January mornings safe on bald all-seasons.

If you drive Pasco to Kennewick mornings, I-182, or Hwy 240 out to Hanford in winter, think about winter tires, even with AWD. We’ll check FWD or AWD on the sticker of the Sportage you drive. Hybrid and PHEV AWD depends on the trim and year, so check, don’t assume.

Why drive the Sportage in Pasco first

Cross-shopping usually means two dealerships and a couple of “come back Friday” loops. Here’s what you can do with me. Sit in a Sportage, whether that’s gas, Hybrid, or PHEV, when we have them. Talk warranty with the booklet open, not a rumor. Then leave with a clear decision, either to keep shopping the RAV4 or come back for the Sportage, with no payment promise sight unseen.

Checked Oct 2, 2026: EPA figures against fueleconomy.gov; Kia specs and prices against Kia Media and kia.com. Competitor figures checked the same day: RAV4 against Toyota Newsroom (2026 RAV4) and fueleconomy.gov; coverage against Toyota warranty and Mazda warranty. Always confirm the window sticker for the VIN you drive.

FAQs

Is Sportage as reliable as RAV4?
Toyota’s got the name. Kia’s got 10 yr / 100k on the powertrain for original owners (limited warranty, so check it on the lot). Compare them on paper, then drive the Sportage and decide with the booklet open. Book a drive · Bring your trade.

Who wins on warranty?
Kia’s typical U.S. coverage is 5 yr / 60k bumper-to-bumper and 10 yr / 100k powertrain (original owner or Kia CPO). Toyota publishes 3/36 + 5/60. These are limited warranties, so check them on the lot and at kia.com/us/en/warranty. A used car from a private seller doesn’t automatically keep the 10/100. Book a drive.

Sportage Hybrid vs RAV4 Hybrid: which should I drive first?
If you’re already deep in the Toyota habit, still try a Sportage Hybrid (or gas or PHEV, whatever’s here) in Pasco so the comparison is fair. Check the EPA numbers and equipment on each sticker. Book a drive · Bring your trade.

What about Mazda CX-5?
It’s a fair cross-shop, just not the main matchup here. Its coverage is usually shorter than Kia’s 10/100 powertrain warranty. Start with the Sportage so you know the trade. Book a drive.

Can I get a payment quote over text?
I don’t quote payments sight unseen. It’s MSRP plus today’s published incentives on the lot. Book a drive, bring your trade, and we’ll write today’s numbers at the store. Book a drive · Bring your trade.
