Toyota Highlander vs Kia Telluride: Space, Hybrid Options, and Warranty for Tri-Cities Families
Last updated Oct 19, 2026
Specs note: Figures vary by year, trim, and options. Confirm the window sticker and kia.com for the VIN on the lot.
Comparing a Kia Telluride and a Toyota Highlander for your family? Smart move. Both are serious three-row SUVs. The catch is that national “winner” lists don’t know your Pasco driveway, your winter tire plan, or whether hybrid mileage matters more to you than third-row and cargo room. Think school runs, Costco, weekend gear, and maybe a Hanford commute on Hwy 240 or a Yakima day.
Hey, I’m Rick G. at Overturf KIA in Pasco. I help people from Yakima to Spokane to Pendleton find the right Kia without the runaround. I’m not here to knock Toyota. I’ll show you how the Telluride stacks up on space and warranty, be straight about which years have a hybrid, and get you in whatever Telluride is on the lot. Fresh write-up on the lot: MSRP plus today’s published incentives.
Quick answer: who should lean Telluride?
Highlander vs Telluride: lean Telluride (gas, or the 2027 Telluride Hybrid) if you want a roomy, upscale-feeling three-row with lots of published cargo space behind the third row and Kia’s long powertrain warranty. You can drive one in Pasco before you keep shopping. The Hybrid is the no-plug mileage pick for Hwy 240 and longer drives, when that VIN is here.
Lean Highlander, especially the Hybrid, if top EPA hybrid mpg is your first filter and you’re already sold on Toyota’s hybrids. Even then, it’s worth a visit so you know what you’re giving up on space and warranty. With the 2027 Telluride Hybrid out, it’s now a hybrid-to-hybrid comparison. See the table below. (Source: kia.com 2027 Telluride Hybrid specs, checked Oct 28, 2026.)
My take: Most families who come in cross-shopping want to feel the third row, the cargo space with all seats up, and whether the cabin fits their kids and gear. You learn that on a drive, not a spreadsheet. Book a Telluride drive, and bring your trade if you’re serious. We write the numbers on the lot.
Space: third row, cargo, and real-life packing
Here are the published SAE cargo figures (checked Oct 2, 2026):
| Measure | 2027 Telluride gas (Hybrid) | 2026 Highlander / Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Behind 3rd row | 22.3 cu ft (21.3) | 16.0 cu ft |
| Behind 2nd row (3rd folded) | 48.7 cu ft (47.7) | 48.4 cu ft |
| Max (rows folded) | 89.3 cu ft (88.3) | 84.3 cu ft |
Sources: Kia Media 2027 Telluride specs; Toyota Newsroom (2026 Highlander). Confirm the window sticker for the unit you drive.
What that means for you:
On paper, the Telluride has more room behind the third row (22.3 vs 16.0 cu ft). That matters when all three rows are up for car seats and you still need room for the stroller, a Costco run, or sports bags.
With the third row folded, they’re close. Depending on the year, the Highlander sometimes edges ahead behind the second row.
Passenger room and shoulder room comparisons often give the Telluride a more open feel. Trust your shoulders more than a chart.
So bring the car seat base or your weekend bag pile, and we’ll load up a Telluride on the Pasco lot when one is here.
Powertrains and hybrid options by model year
This is where people get tripped up, especially if you’ve seen “Telluride Hybrid” headlines and assumed every Telluride on every lot is one.
Highlander: Toyota has led with hybrids for years. The 2026 Highlander Hybrid is AWD-only, rated at 243 net hp by Toyota and 35 mpg combined by the EPA (35/35 city/hwy; Limited/Platinum 35/34). If top hybrid mpg is your #1 filter and you already know Toyota hybrids, the Highlander Hybrid is a fair default. Still drive a Telluride here so you know the space and warranty trade.
Telluride gas (what most folks still drive first): Many Tellurides you’ll see today are the strong gas version (EPA 22 mpg combined FWD / 20 AWD (2027), so check the sticker for that VIN). Gas is the simple ownership choice if hybrid mpg isn’t your priority and you want AWD or towing when equipped.
Telluride Hybrid (2027): In the U.S., the Hybrid starts with the 2027 model, not 2026. Kia Media lists a 2.5L turbo hybrid with 329 hp / 339 lb-ft and a 6-speed auto. Per the EPA, examples run 35 mpg combined on the EX FWD (34/36), 33 on other FWD trims, and 31 on AWD (30/32). Check the sticker for that VIN. It tows up to about 4,500 lb when equipped.
For Hwy 240 and Hanford weeks: If your week is errands around town plus Hwy 240 out to Hanford, and you don’t want to plug in, a self-charging 2027 Telluride Hybrid gets you better mileage and keeps the three-row SUV. A PHEV assumes you charge every night, and this doesn’t. Go gas if you want it simple. Go Hybrid if your miles make the EPA numbers worth comparing to the Highlander Hybrid’s on paper.
About the Highlander Hybrid: It’s been around longer. The Telluride Hybrid is new for 2027, so timing matters. When one is here, the hybrid-to-hybrid comparison is fairer: mpg, space, warranty, and how it feels on I-182 or Hwy 240. When it isn’t, I’ll tell you, check overturfkia.com, and still put you in a gas Telluride so you know the cabin and cargo before you decide.
How I’d go about it: First, decide what matters most: hybrid mpg with no plug, the simplest gas ownership, or three-row room and AWD for winter. Then check overturfkia.com for a Telluride or Telluride Hybrid as equipped. I won’t promise one that isn’t here. Then drive what’s on the lot. Pick Telluride Hybrid on the Book-a-drive form if that’s what you want. If the Hybrid hasn’t arrived yet, I’ll be straight about timing and you can still feel the gas Telluride’s space.
I won’t make up a hybrid that isn’t here.
2027 Telluride Hybrid vs Highlander Hybrid
This is the matchup most people are really asking about. Toyota says the 2027 Highlander is all-electric, so the 2026 Highlander Hybrid is the hybrid Highlander to compare. Here it is next to the 2027 Telluride Hybrid, using Kia’s, Toyota’s and the EPA’s own numbers.
| 2027 Telluride Hybrid | 2026 Highlander Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | 2.5L turbo hybrid, 329 hp / 339 lb-ft, 6-speed automatic | 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid, 243 net hp |
| Drive | FWD or AWD, by trim | AWD on every grade |
| Seats | 7 on every trim | 7, or 8 with the available bench on the XLE |

Specs vary by trim. Confirm on the window sticker.
What that means for you:
- Mileage: the Highlander Hybrid wins with AWD. The EPA rates it at 35 mpg combined. The AWD Telluride Hybrid is rated 31. The FWD Telluride Hybrid EX matches 35, but you give up AWD to get it.
- Room: the Telluride Hybrid wins. It has 32.1 vs 28.0 inches of 3rd-row legroom, and 21.3 vs 16.0 cubic feet behind the 3rd row. With the 3rd row folded, they’re close (47.7 vs 48.4).
- Power and towing: the Telluride Hybrid. 329 vs 243 hp, and 4,500 vs 3,500 lb when properly equipped.
- Seats: the Highlander Hybrid can seat 8. Toyota offers a bench on the XLE. Every Telluride Hybrid seats 7.
- Warranty: Kia covers the powertrain longer. 10 years/100,000 miles for the original owner vs Toyota’s 5 years/60,000 miles.
So it comes down to what you’ll notice every day: a few more mpg with AWD, or more 3rd-row room, power and towing. Compare on paper here, then come drive the Telluride Hybrid at Overturf KIA in Pasco. Tell me which trim you want to try, and I’ll check what’s on the lot and email you to confirm a time.
Warranty, without the scare tactics
Kia’s U.S. new-vehicle warranty is a real plus for families who keep their cars a long time:
Kia (typical U.S. coverage): 5 years / 60,000 miles basic and 10 years / 100,000 miles powertrain (original owner terms apply, so check the current booklet).
Toyota (typical U.S. coverage): 3 years / 36,000 miles basic and 5 years / 60,000 miles powertrain.
That’s not saying Toyota is unreliable. Kia just covers the powertrain longer, if that matters to you. Check the exact coverage for the model year, and any hybrid parts, on the car you buy.
Winter, AWD, and Eastern WA reality
Basin frost, fog, and ice show up no matter what the badge says. AWD helps, but tires decide. If you drive Richland to Pasco mornings, I-182, or Hwy 240 out to Hanford in January, think about winter tires, even with AWD.
Telluride shoppers often want AWD for peace of mind on damp mornings and weekend trips to the Blue Mountains or Yakima. We’ll check the drive type on the sticker of the one you drive.
Why drive the Telluride in Pasco first
Cross-shopping usually means two dealerships, two schedules, and a couple of “come back Friday” loops. Here’s what you can do with me. Sit in a Telluride, plus other Kia three-rows like the Carnival or Sorento when we have them. Feel the third-row access and the cargo space with the seats up. Then leave with a clear decision, whether that’s to keep shopping the Highlander Hybrid or come back for the Telluride, with no payment promise sight unseen.
Book a drive and bring your trade, and we’ll do a fresh write-up with today’s incentives. No beat-any-quote games.
What to compare on the drive
Have someone with adult knees climb into the third row. Check the cargo with the third row up and folded. See how the size and visibility feel compared to your garage or a downtown Kennewick spot. Listen for road noise merging onto I-182 or US-395, and try a stretch of Hwy 240 if there’s time. Think about the seat on a Yakima or Spokane day trip. Pair your phone without a 20-minute tutorial. And check the AWD and the tires on the one you’re looking at.

FAQs
Is Telluride bigger than Highlander?
On a lot of published cargo charts, the Telluride has more space behind the third row. With the third row folded, they’re closer. The best test is loading your real gear into a Telluride on the Pasco lot, because paper only tells you so much.
Does Telluride have a hybrid like Highlander Hybrid?
The Highlander Hybrid has been around for years. The Telluride Hybrid is new to the U.S. for 2027 (not 2026). Per Kia Media, it uses a 2.5L turbo hybrid with 329 hp / 339 lb-ft and a 6-speed auto. Per the EPA, examples often hit 35 mpg combined on the EX FWD (34/36), 33 on other FWD trims, and 31 on AWD (30/32). It tows up to 4,500 lb when equipped, so check the sticker. It’s a great fit if you drive Hwy 240 to Hanford and want hybrid mileage with no plug in a three-row SUV. Check overturfkia.com, and pick Telluride Hybrid on the form if that’s your interest. I won’t make up a hybrid VIN.
Who wins on warranty?
Kia’s typical U.S. powertrain coverage (10/100) runs longer than Toyota’s published 5/60. Check the booklets for the year you buy.
Should I skip Telluride if I want max mpg?
If hybrid mpg is a must and the Highlander Hybrid is the only one you can get right now, that’s a fair call. Still drive a Telluride so you know the space you’re trading. If a Telluride Hybrid is on the lot, the comparison gets a lot fairer.
Can I get MSRP and current incentives by email before I visit?
Yes. Tell me the Telluride or Telluride Hybrid trim you want, and I’ll email you Kia’s MSRP for it plus the incentives Kia is publishing right now. Incentives change, so I’ll put the date on the email. When you come in, I’ll write it up fresh on the lot with that day’s published incentives.
