Kia Sorento gas vs Hybrid vs PHEV in the Tri-Cities: midsize 3-row powertrain guide
Last updated Oct 19, 2026
Specs note: Figures vary by year, trim, and options. Confirm the window sticker, kia.com, and fueleconomy.gov for the VIN on the lot.
A lot of families around here overlook the Sorento, and it’s a sweet spot. You get three rows when you need them and a midsize footprint that’s easy to park in Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland. You also get a real choice between gas, Hybrid, and Plug-In Hybrid.
Hey, I’m Rick G. at Overturf KIA in Pasco. I help people from Yakima to Spokane to Pendleton pick the right Kia without the runaround. Wondering if a plug is worth it? We match the powertrain to your week, you drive what’s here, and you get a fresh write-up on the lot, MSRP plus today’s published incentives.
Quick answer: which Sorento powertrain fits?
For most Eastern WA drivers, the Hybrid is the sweet spot. You get better mileage without plugging in, whether it’s mixed miles around town, Hwy 240 out to Hanford, or a day trip to Yakima or Hermiston.
Go gas if you want the simplest ownership with nothing new to learn. Gas also tends to have the most trims and the best towing when equipped, especially the turbo trims.
The PHEV only makes sense if you can charge at home or work most days and a lot of your weekday miles fit the electric range. That can work even with a Hanford day on Hwy 240. If you won’t plug in, you’re paying PHEV money for Hybrid driving, so get the Hybrid or gas.
Need AWD for winter? Check FWD or AWD by powertrain and trim on the sticker. The PHEV is typically AWD.
How the three Sorento powertrains differ (2027 gas and Hybrid, 2026 PHEV, confirm on sticker)
Gas Sorento
There are two gas engines for 2027.
The LX and S get a 2.5L non-turbo with 186 hp and 178 lb-ft and an 8-speed automatic. EPA examples are 23/31/26 for FWD and 23/28/25 for AWD.
EX and up get the 2.5L turbo with 274 hp and 311 lb-ft and an 8-speed DCT. EPA examples are 20/29/23 for FWD and 20/27/23 for AWD.
Cargo (SAE) is about 12.6 cu ft behind the 3rd row, 38.5 to 45.0 behind the 2nd, and 75.5 behind the 1st.
Towing when equipped starts around 2,000 lb braked. With the tow package it’s commonly 3,500 lb, and some AWD turbo setups list up to about 4,500 lb with the required equipment. Check the sticker or tow guide for that VIN.
Gas is for folks who want familiar ownership, strong turbo punch on the higher trims, and towing when it’s set up right.
Sorento Hybrid
A 1.6L turbo and an electric motor make 232 hp and 270 lb-ft combined. It charges itself, so there’s no plug.
EPA examples are about 37/36/37 for FWD and about 32/35/34 for AWD (city/highway/combined, check the sticker).
This is the one for most commuters around here who want better mileage without changing how they fuel up. It’s a great daily driver that has a third row when you need it.
Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)
It makes about 268 hp and 270 lb-ft combined, and it’s typically AWD.
EPA examples (2026): about 74 MPGe combined when charged, 33 mpg combined on gas only, and 30 miles of EPA all-electric range, with about 440 mi of total range. Check the sticker and owner’s manual. See also fueleconomy.gov.
You only get the full benefit if you charge it regularly. Once the battery’s empty, it drives like a hybrid. If you won’t plug in, get the Hybrid.

How your week shapes the pick
Around Pasco, Kennewick, and Richland
Stop-and-go and short hops favor the Hybrid. The PHEV can shine if overnight Level 2 (or a patient 120V) is easy and many days stay near the EV range. Go gas if you want it simple or need turbo towing.
Hwy 240, Hanford, and longer days
Hwy 240 out to Hanford, or trips to Yakima, Hermiston, Pendleton, or Spokane? The Hybrid keeps mileage up with no charger hunting. The PHEV becomes a hybrid once the battery’s empty, so don’t buy it as a road-trip EV. Tow, or want more passing power? Gas turbo.
One-car family with occasional third row
For many families, the third row is a sometimes seat, perfect for grandparents or soccer carpool. Torn? Try the Sorento, Telluride, and Carnival on one visit when we have them: flexible midsize, bigger three-row, or sliding doors and max cargo.
Winter, AWD, and PHEV reality in the Columbia Basin
AWD helps on frost and ice, but tires matter more. The PHEV’s AWD is a plus if you’ll really plug it in. If you don’t have a charging plan, a Hybrid AWD trim is a sweet spot for Basin winters.
Before you pick the PHEV: can you charge in your garage or driveway most nights? Does your HOA or apartment limit it? Work charging is a backup, not the plan. And expect some EV range loss in the cold.
My rule: if you won’t plug in most nights, get the Hybrid or gas, not the PHEV.
Cost & incentives without fake math
I won’t make up break-even miles. Compare as-equipped prices on overturfkia.com. PHEV savings depend on how often you charge; the Hybrid saves with no plug. Think about towing, AWD, and how long you’ll keep it, and ask about current offers and PHEV incentive eligibility, since rules change. What to compare on a Pasco test drive
Have an adult try the third row. Load a stroller or Costco run with it up and folded. Feel Hybrid and gas in town traffic. Eyeing the turbo? Merge onto I-182, and try Hwy 240 if there’s time. On the PHEV, I’ll show you the EV, Hybrid, and charge displays. Try AWD on a damp lot, and ask yourself if the seat works for a Yakima day.

Washington incentives (checked Oct 2, 2026): Washington’s sales and use tax exemption for clean-fuel vehicles ended July 31, 2025 (WA DOL), and the state EV Instant Rebate program is closed (WA Commerce). The federal 30D credit isn’t available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025 (IRS). Locally, Benton PUD lists a $250 rebate for a new all-electric vehicle (no gas engine, so plug-in hybrids don’t qualify) plus $20 for a qualifying Level 2 charger, and Richland Energy Services offers $300 for an Energy Star Level 2 smart charger. I found no EV rebate listed by Franklin PUD. Programs change, so confirm with your utility before you buy.

FAQs
Is Sorento Hybrid worth it over gas for Tri-Cities miles?
For most mixed Basin driving without a plug, Hanford days on Hwy 240 included, the Hybrid is the mileage step that doesn’t change your habits. We’ll compare as-equipped prices on a fresh write-up, with no made-up savings math.
Does the Sorento Hybrid need premium gas?
No. Kia lists regular unleaded, 87 octane or higher, for every 2027 Sorento Hybrid trim. Kia’s owner’s manual for the 2026 Sorento Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid says the same thing: unleaded fuel rated 87 octane or higher. The manual also says not to use fuel with more than 15% ethanol, so skip E85.
Sources: kia.com 2027 Sorento Hybrid specs (Fuel Requirement: Regular Unleaded, 87 Octane or higher); Kia owner’s manual, 2026 Sorento Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid, Fuel requirements. Checked Oct 28, 2026.
When should I buy Sorento PHEV?
When you can charge most days and your weekday miles often fit within its 30 miles of EPA EV range (check the sticker). Otherwise, get the Hybrid.
Can Sorento tow my small trailer?
Maybe. The gas turbo with the right package usually has the highest ratings, and the Hybrid and PHEV usually rate lower. Check the tow guide for the VIN you buy.
Sorento or Telluride?
The Sorento gives you midsize flexibility and a choice of powertrains. The Telluride is the bigger three-row with different packaging. Both are Kias, so you can try them on the same visit.
Do I need AWD?
A lot of folks here want it for frost and ice. Pair AWD with good tires, and check the drive type by trim and powertrain on the sticker.
