Kia Carnival vs Kia Telluride in the Tri-Cities: minivan or 3-row SUV for families
Last updated Oct 19, 2026
Specs note: Figures vary by year, trim, and options. Confirm the window sticker and kia.com for the VIN on the lot.
A lot of families around here hit the same wall. You need three rows that really work for car seats, sports bags, and a Costco run, and you’re stuck between “we don’t want a minivan” and an SUV whose third row and cargo fight you every Tuesday.
Hey, I’m Rick G. at Overturf KIA in Pasco. I help people from Yakima to Spokane to Pendleton pick the right Kia without the runaround. Carnival vs Telluride isn’t about winning an internet argument. It comes down to sliding doors or regular doors, how you park at school, whether hybrid mileage matters, and whether AWD, towing, or ground clearance matter more than max cargo. Drive what’s here. Fresh write-up on the lot: MSRP plus today’s published incentives.
Quick answer: which one fits your week?
Pick the Carnival if your week is school loops, car seat installs, rainy curbside drops, and packing with the third row still up. Sliding doors and minivan packaging win on easy access and published cargo space.
Pick the Telluride if you want the look and feel of a three-row SUV, more ground clearance, AWD for winter, and more towing when equipped. You just give up some space behind the third row and the ease of sliding doors.
On hybrids: you’ve really got three choices. (1) The Carnival Hybrid gives you no-plug mileage plus sliding doors and max cargo. (2) The gas Telluride gives you the SUV stance, AWD, and towing when equipped. (3) The Telluride Hybrid (2027) gives you a three-row SUV with hybrid mileage, when one is on the lot. Check inventory, since I won’t make up cars. You can pick Telluride Hybrid from the model menu on the Book-a-drive form.
Sliding doors, school runs, and parking lots
It isn’t glamorous, but this sells a Carnival, or doesn’t, in about ten minutes on the lot. Sliding doors shine in tight Kennewick and Richland school lines and crowded Columbia Center parking. Kids climb into car seats without fighting a hinged door, and on rainy drops you’re not swinging a door into the puddle or the pickup next to you.
The Telluride still wins for people who just like SUV proportions, sitting up higher, and not driving a van. That’s fair. Just know hinged doors aren’t as easy in a packed drop-off line.
Try them both. Ten minutes of real loading beats a year of second-guessing.
Space: cargo with the third row up
The 2027 Carnival’s published SAE cargo space is 40.2 cu ft behind the 3rd row and 145.1 cu ft max, and kia.com lists the same for the Carnival Hybrid. For the space behind the 2nd row, confirm on the window sticker.
The 2027 Telluride lists 22.3 cu ft behind the 3rd row and 89.3 cu ft max with the rows folded (21.3 and 88.3 on the Telluride Hybrid).
The Telluride cargo numbers come from kia.com. Check every number on the sticker.
What that means for you: if you keep three rows up most weeks for car seats, grandparents, and gear, the Carnival’s space behind the third row is the difference between it all fitting and making a second trip. If you fold the third row a lot and want the SUV stance, the Telluride can still be the better daily driver.
The Carnival’s third row also tends to be friendlier for adults on paper, with legroom often listed near ~35.6 in. Sit in both and see.

Carnival Hybrid, Telluride gas, or Telluride Hybrid?
Carnival Hybrid (2027): it charges itself, using a 1.6L turbo and an electric motor (check the sticker for combined output). It’s front-wheel drive, like every Carnival. It’s a great fit for mixed miles around town, Hanford weeks on Hwy 240, and longer days when you want better mileage without plugging in, plus sliding doors and cargo room.
Carnival gas: familiar gas ownership if the Hybrid isn’t your priority.
Telluride gas: a strong gas three-row SUV, and the one you’ll see on a lot of lots. AWD for winter, sitting up higher, and more towing when equipped are big reasons families pick it over a van. Check the drive type and tow package on the sticker.
More on the gas Telluride’s seats, towing and X-Pro in my 2027 Telluride gas guide.
Telluride Hybrid (when on the lot): this is the 2027 U.S. Hybrid, with about ~329 hp / ~339 lb-ft from a 2.5L turbo hybrid and a 6-speed auto. Per the EPA, examples often hit 35 mpg combined on the EX FWD (34/36), 33 on other FWD trims, and 31 on AWD (30/32). It tows up to 4,500 lb when equipped, so check the sticker. See overturfkia.com. If the Hybrid isn’t here yet, drive the gas Telluride for the space and AWD feel and the Carnival Hybrid for the no-plug van, then pick the matching model on the form (Telluride Hybrid is on there).
A quick filter:
| Priority | Lean |
|---|---|
| Max cargo + sliding doors | Carnival |
| Hybrid mpg without a plug + sliding doors / cargo | Carnival Hybrid |
| Hybrid mpg without a plug + 3-row SUV (when on lot) | Telluride Hybrid (2027, when on lot) |
| AWD / winter confidence / SUV look | Telluride (gas or Hybrid when equipped) |
| Towing when properly equipped | Telluride up to 5,000 lb, Telluride Hybrid up to 4,500 lb, Carnival up to 3,500 lb (confirm sticker) |
| Parking ease at school | Carnival |

Winter, AWD, and Columbia Basin driving
Our winters reward good tires first. If AWD is a must for your Hwy 240 commute to Hanford or Blue Mountain weekends, the Telluride is the one of these two that offers it. Every Carnival, gas or Hybrid, is front-wheel drive, so plan your tires and driving with that in mind. Plenty of families here run a Carnival year-round on the right tires.
Fog on I-182 or Hwy 240, frost on Pasco side streets, and black ice after a melt don’t care what badge you drive. We’ll talk tires and drive type on the one you actually drive.
Driving both in Pasco
When we have both, load the car seats and stroller into the Carnival, then the same load into the Telluride. Have adults sit in each third row. Picture each one in your garage and at the school curb. Take each onto I-182 or US-395 to feel the merge, and take a stretch of Hwy 240 if there’s time. And save the Hybrid questions for when that model is here.
Bring the kids if you can. How they feel climbing in tells you more than a brochure.

FAQs
Is Carnival just a fancy minivan?
It’s a minivan with modern looks and serious cargo space. If sliding doors and room behind the third row matter more than SUV styling, that’s a feature, not a flaw.
Is the Kia Carnival bigger than the Telluride?
Yes, in the ways that matter for packing. Kia lists the Carnival at 203.0 inches long on a 121.7-inch wheelbase, vs 199.2 and 116.9 for the 2027 Telluride. Behind the third row it’s 40.2 cubic feet vs 22.3 in the gas Telluride. The two are about the same width. The Telluride sits a little taller and has more ground clearance (7.4 inches vs 6.8). If you keep the third row up most days, that cargo gap is the one you’ll feel.

Does the Kia Carnival come with captain’s chairs, or 7 vs 8 seats?
Yes, both. Kia lists the 2027 Carnival with 8 seats on most trims and 7 on the LX. On the EX, SX and SX Prestige, you can get 7 seats with 2nd-row captain’s chairs through a package. The Carnival Hybrid seats 8 standard, with 7 by package. Check the seat count on the window sticker.
Source: kia.com 2027 Carnival and Carnival Hybrid specs, checked Oct 28, 2026 (7 standard on LX; 7 available via the Dark Edition Package on EX and SX and the SX Prestige Seat Package; Hybrid 8 standard, 7 available on EX, SX, SX Prestige).
Will I regret a van socially?
Some people worry about it. Most folks who drive a Carnival for a week care more about Tuesday drop-off than parking lot comments. Drive one before you let the internet decide.
Does Carnival Hybrid need a plug?
No. The Hybrid charges itself. Plug-in hybrids are a different story on other Kia models. Check the badge and sticker on the one you drive.
Can Telluride tow more?
Yes. Kia lists 5,000 lb for the 2027 gas Telluride and 4,500 lb for the Telluride Hybrid. The Carnival is rated lower: 3,500 lb for the V6 and 2,500 lb for the Hybrid, both with trailer brakes. Towing needs extra equipment, so check the owner’s manual and the window sticker first.
Is the Kia Carnival AWD?
No. Every 2027 Carnival, gas or Hybrid, is front-wheel drive, and Kia doesn’t offer AWD on it. If AWD is a must for your Hwy 240 commute or Blue Mountain weekends, look at the Telluride, which offers AWD on most trims. Either way, good tires matter most here in winter.
Is the Carnival good in the snow?
It can be, on the right tires. The Carnival is front-wheel drive, so tires do most of the work on snow and ice. Good winter or all-weather tires make the biggest difference on Pasco side streets and Hwy 240. Slow down, leave extra room, and check the tires on any Carnival you’re looking at.

What if I want both Hybrid and AWD?
Tell us your must-haves, and we’ll check what’s actually here: a Telluride Hybrid AWD when one is on the lot (2027), a Sorento or Sportage Hybrid AWD, or a gas Telluride AWD. No bait and switch. Pick Telluride Hybrid from the model menu on the Book-a-drive form if that’s the one you want.
